West Berkshire Council have issued the following press release:
From Monday 22 September 2025, West Berkshire Council will introduce three-weekly black bin collections. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to:
Increase recycling rates
Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill or incineration
Protect vital local services
This change aligns with our Waste Management Strategy 2025–2032 and broader climate objectives.
Why this change is necessary
West Berkshire is currently among the top 10% of waste-producing areas in England, ranking 25th out of over 300 local authorities for waste generated per person (Defra, 2023/24). Recent analysis shows that 42% of black bin contents could have been recycled, including 22% food waste. This presents a significant opportunity to improve our recycling performance.
What’s staying the same
Weekly food waste collections
Fortnightly recycling collections
Fortnightly garden waste collections (for subscribers)
Collection days will not change
Communal bin stores (e.g. for flats) will not be affected
Supporting residents through the transition
We understand this is a significant change and are putting in place a range of support measures:
Collection calendars and information leaflets will be delivered to households between 25 August and 5 September
Continued offer of replacement, and extra recycling containers free of charge.
Additional black bin capacity available for larger families or those with medical needs
Real nappy starter packs and cashback available to help reduce nappy waste
Practical advice and resources to help residents make the most of our recycling services
Recycling waste is important but it’s even better to try and reduce the amount of waste produced in the first place. Residents can access our top tips and advice on how to reduce and reuse their waste by visiting: Reducing your waste - West Berkshire Council
