Warning about cold callers and people trying to sell alarm systems - please advise elderly neighbours.

[THAMES VALLEY COMMUNITY MESSAGING - West Berks - F012904]

>

This is a message dated 29th January for all NHW and Community members. I

have received a number of calls from NHW co-ordinators concerning security

companies currently contacting mainly elderly residents in West Berkshire.

The companies appear to be offering free home security devices such as

alarms and ask lots of questions about the security of your property and

pressurise people to make an appointment for a sales person to visit.

Obviously nothing is free nowadays and people who have responded are

finding there are costs involved.

If you receive such a call from a security company I would simply decline

the offer and put the phone down. Don't engage in a conversation with them

and never give out personal information, especially as to the level of

protection you have for your home. If you do feel you need the product

they are trying to sell obtain at least three quotes from local suppliers.

Please can NHW co-ordinators pass this message onto all of their scheme

members and especially any vulnerable or elderly residents in your roads

and remind them not to be pressurised into making appointments for sales

persons to call but to simple put the phone down. If you have any

concerns about cold callers using underhand tactics you can contact

Trading Standards on 01635 519930.
